Follow this link to check out some hippie towns. What are some of your favorites? Any not listed that you think are hippie towns?

My favorites that I've been to include Ashland, Eugene, Venice, Boulder, Berkeley, Portland, S.F., Arcata, and Santa Cruz.

  • Shane, you mention Venice (i assume you mean Venice CA)...i guess you might or might not know that in the late 50s to very early 60s, Venice had a significant Beat community.
  • Santa Cruz Babe!
    My favorite town period.

I would also throw Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii onto that list for sure.
    • Don't forget Puna, Hawaii.
      • Puna f*&^ing RULES!!! I did not mention it because it is really more of an area than a town. Aaaahhhhhhh, Kehena Beach, possibly my favorite place in the world. Definitely my favorite beach in the world, and I have been to a lot of beaches. Maybe a seperate thread, favorite beaches?
  • Ocean Beach, California!!!
    • people! people! how can anyone forget AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND???

'nother thing: Shane, in response to your email query re Venice West Beat a "venice west beat" search on yahoo. this will spit up more usefull & informative bits than i can summon off the top of my head.
      • i bet this will be a surprise to all of you
there are a plethora of hippi towns in israel

        moshav mavo modiim

the entire northern section of the dead sea is inhabited by people who live naturally in zulas. there are also hiipi communities in that area spread around the northern dessert.

clil is a town that until a decade ago didn't use any electricity.

i have a bunch of friends who are fiding a yishuv now in northern israel that is based on a complete organinc and natural living. theres a lot of stuff going on there (this is bc every is soooo uptight and tense in israel that there are a lot of young soul trying to free themselves)
  • well for those of us stuck in non-hippie towns, for whatever reasons, it's still great to hear that such places still exist so there is hope. :) can i pretend i'm one of you??
    • I'm moving to B.C. soon to find the right hippie town. I'm thinking either Roberts Creek or somewhere on Salt Spring Island.

      /can't wait
  • ya i loved arcata, and north of there in oregon like bandon etc, there are also little towns on the east coast- in vermont like st. johnsbury and a bigger community in brattleboro- both progressive communities. with a lot of kind people.
  • believe it or not, there are neohiipis on the east coast... many in Maine, the Boston area (cambridge and Jamaica Plain), and especially western mass and vermont (northampton, amherst, wendell, greenfield, burlington, VT, bratt., VT), and new york -- woodstock, new paltz, ithaca, and many in, asheville, north carolina, gainesville, Florida and Austin, Texas
  • Hi, new here. I live in MA and love Northampton. My deadhead hubby grew up in Easthampton, lots of neo hippies there also.
And Providence, RI's eastside has a growing hippie pop., quite a few colleges there including RISD and Brown.

Woohoo! All those east coast mountain folk know what a beauty the appalachain mountains give this small mountain town. It's full to the rafters with hippies, lesbians, and chai drinkin punks lol.
You can't beat a town thats surrounded entirely by national forests, rivers, and not to mention, is on the oldest mountains in north america. home sweet home. you have to travel there.
    • It's not a "hippie town" by a long shot, but I just love going to see shows in Vegas. Dreadheads take over the casinoes, playing blackjack and the like. It's got to be the ultimate clash of cultures. Very cool.
