Re: The Healthy Hippie,....
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 11:11 AMGypsy - this a REAL culture on earth, with everything that makes them a culture. You can't just wake up one day a gypsy, it is like waking up and saying you are a Hadia or something... gees.... hippy culture steals others family history. -

Re: The Healthy Hippie,....
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 2:50 PMhmmm.... as an actual hippy from back in the day, i'd have to be suspect of a commercial venture initiated by a 'hippy'. somehow the idea of a commercialized hippy is truly oxymoronic. i think if someone sells out to t'he man' and engages in capitilistic ventures, is not a hippy at all.
let your freak flag fly, but not over wall-mart.

"Gypsy" was a negative term given to these people, they are "Rom" the true name of the culture. -

Re: The Healthy Hippie,....
Wed, May 28, 2008 - 11:04 AMthe grateful dead were artists and were highly in demand. and i'm afraid that 'ben and jerry' are not names that ring bells in canada, or at least with me. who are they?
the point i was making was that a commercial business venture struck me as contrary to the idea of 'hippydom'. i don't imagine that the dead sold advertising space at their concerts. certainly a magazine publisher can't be held in the same vane.
certainly a lot of former hippies have entered the business world, but cutting ther hair, wearing suits and ties and dealing with the world of capital are at odds of the whole idea of rebelling against mainstream society. -

Fri, May 30, 2008 - 6:08 AMBen and Jerry are two hippies in Vermont who some years ago started a successful homemade ice cream business.
One of their most popular flavors is "Cherry Garcia"

Re: The Healthy Hippie,....
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 6:25 AMSelling out commercially means that you gave your soul and integrity for money, making money wisely is not "selling out" it's intelligent.
Advertising in a magazine isn't "the" example of selling out commercially. Many years ago, I used to be an illustrator, I'd done renderings for magazines, all of which I was paid for. The period when I sold out was when I did jobs I hated for money.
Now I make money playing music, which I love, I play only music that I want to play, that's intelligent. The health-food person we're referring to sounds intelligent, doing something worthwhile that provides for her. Anyone can sit in the street and earn nothing.
As for the Grateful Dead and selling out, yeah, they were "artists" at the beginning, but then they became a corporation as any other commercial venture. Read Phil Lesh's auto-biography, he'll fill you in.
Re: "cutting hair, wearing suits..."
How one wears their hair and clothes means nothing beneath the skin, I know more deeper, spiritually based people who work at careers and have suits and short hair, and I know more phony people with dirty feet, smoke pot, and drench themselves in pachuli, and visa-versa. -

Re: The Healthy Hippie,....
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 8:56 AMHi! I am the owner of The Healthy Hippie Magazine and I am not selling out the the man at all. My favorite things in life are green living and building, health and nutrition, and live music so I decided to make a magazine out of it so I can live the life I love! I am picky with who advertises with me. I make sure that the company is socially conscious and responsible so that my readers can trust if someone is advertising that they can use that product or service. It is a positive publication that has articles on green camping, holistic pets, hippie babies, sex by the horny hippie, yoga, socially conscious investing, bands that are going green, organic gardening tips, a column on bees, festival reviews, green product reviews, green restaurant review, cd reviews, recipes, artist spotlight, and non-profit spotlight. You can get it free in Vermont and at some music festivals. We also have street teams in NYC, NJ, Albany, Ithaca, Boston, and Boulder.
So I'm doing what I love and educating others on important, fun, and postive topics.
