that thread was getting pretty long, and i'd like to put my 2 cents in....

I think there were varying degrees of what a "hippie" is, or more specifically, what it was.from the reasearch that I have done, and come across, That the movement started in the early 60's, It was born out of a dislike for the current social "statusphere" (it probably even started back in the 50's "rebel without a cause" ) kids were getting real sick of the "leave it to beaver' idealology and I believe the earth itself was awakening to reality. so kids were like, this is B. S. and there was this real vibe, this "Spirit" that litterally moved hundreds of kids out of there homes in the mid-west. ( I would like to add, that it all came out of the bible -belt, so many kids caught on that the "traditional" churches just didn't have "it" and they, being truly peaceful and loving, were sick of the faky fake ness of thier parents religion, I believe that the true nature of the original "hippies" was to live a closer life, and a closer "way" to Christ. More saintlike than anything America has ever experienced. I don't know if any of you have ever heard the term "jesus movement" but thats what it was. And Flower children, it was like a complete blending of TRUE christianity and nature worship Could I dare to say a blend of Pagan/Christian? Then the movement hit the west coast, and it started to become "hip" to hang out, smoking herb and whatnot, All the "Hippies' were dirty, because nobody hardly thought to offer them showers, I imagine, why do you think jesus washed his friends feet? So then the government started to get real nervous, and wanted to break up the party, they introduced LSD< and other harder drugs, the "Christian" churches went on huge crusades to adopt the "lost sheep" back into the flock, putting many "back to sleep', if you will. So the true nature of what a hippy was, was not even seen by the majority of folks, as it was quickly veiwed as a culture that could be a threat to the "normal' way of american life, and transmuted, mutated to become something else, something that the media and govt could cast as a negative. Thisis my story, an' im stikkin 2 it. haha MaMa Sunny

OMG!!! Where do these things come from!!! (don't take this too personal MaMa, but you hit a button on my "con-soul")

The "Jesus Movement" was never part of the "Hippie Movement". There was NO Hippie movement!!! And the "Jesus Freaks" were mostly anti-hippie (too open minded for Christians I'd say). The JF's moved on and became "Born Agains", whatever that means! (fucking labels!)

I might know a little bit about it cause I LIVED it. I didn't read about it in the Christan Science Mag!!!!

We got labeled hippies and it stuck. Most of my "hippie" friends were studying TM and the eastern mystics.(1964-5) None of us called each other hippies. The move away from bullshit, fake and "plastic people" was a natural thing to do after the search for enlightenment showed the true nature of man.

Please stop talking like you know what hippies are. No two are alike.
They are just as different and special as anyone.
And yes there are new ones born every day. (long live hippies mama's!!)

Remember.... "You must be the change you want to see in the world" xoxox :p

Yah, Yah, I know we all see things from a different side of the spectrum, right? I dont take your criticism personal, babe! bless you and your voice! Yah, I know I was gettin in the hot tub even discussing something to do with labels, especially "hippie" which I know was a label given by the media, right? You are right, I was not there, at least not in this body..... but I am so drawn to the whole experience, and It is like my historical mantra, I desire to hold on to the "true" essence of the dynamics of what happened, how people came together, and started standing for something as a community, I have been looking for it in this world today, and I won't give up till I find it Something amazing happened then, and I am going to hold on to that dynamic, and It probably can't even be described in words, but I thinkit was fucking awsome, and I really appreciate you elders standing up and recounting your experiences, cause somewhere in the middle of it all are nuggets of revelation and beauty that we(um I mean YOU ;) really, we, can pass on to these younger generations, that can seem to get lost in this big wide world that has so much to offer, most of which is STILL FAKE< BULLSHIT AND PLASTIC!!! AAAARGHHHH! And no, I WON'T stop talking, even if you say please. :P :) PS< what is TM? luv2u

this is an old thread, so i may not get a response, but i'll try..

are you speaking only historically about the "jesus movement" and how it was not connected to the "hippie movement" overall? i can't talk about what's happened in the past, because i wasn't there. i can say what i'm seeing happen around me today, though, and the most active participants in what i understand to be the love agenda are the lovers of christ (those who accept that this is only one manifestation of the creative force that brought and binds us all together). of course, i'm in the heartland, where conventional spin-offs are much more likely to gain popularity (to any degree) than total deviations from the dom culture, but of those around here who still follow the love agenda (the first generation who hasn't sold out), many believe in mysticism as well as christ. all are tolerant of both. sure, a lot of jesus freaks did become born agains; a lot of mystics wound up working for insurance companies and banks, too. who is to say that wasn't their path (i mean, for
      each individual)?

personally, i love them all, and have faith they can all find their way home.
